Summary

Now a Netflix original series!

Geralt the Witcher -- revered and hated -- holds the line against the monsters plaguing humanity in this collection of adventures in the NYT bestselling series that inspired the blockbuster video games。

Geralt is a Witcher, a man whose magic powers, enhanced by long training and a mysterious elixir, have made him a brilliant fighter and a merciless assassin。 Yet he is no ordinary murderer: his targets are the multifarious monsters and vile fiends that ravage the land and attack the innocent。
But not everything monstrous-looking is evil and not everything fair is good。。。and in every fairy tale there is a grain of truth。

Andrzej Sapkowski, winner of the World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement award, started an international phenomenon with his Witcher series。 The Last Wish short story collection is the perfect introduction to this one of a kind fantasy world。

This book was entertaining if a little choppy。 I enjoyed the stories but hoped for some more character development。

Fun and refreshing magical realism story that balances pain, humor, horror, monsters and thrills in a clean and easy to read fashion。 Already booked onto the next book in the series。The show changes a good amount of details per each story but that’s what makes the books even more exciting to read。 You also get much more backstory than the show provides。

Geralt is actually a romantic lol。

I highly recommend reading this with the translation guide on Reddit by u/coldcynic。 Tells you about puns and jokes that got lost in translation, as well as giving you a sense for how the language is used in the original Polish。 I know nothing about Polish, but now I know that they have eight words for door。 And that "Mousesack" apparently sounds like a perfectly serious name for a druid to have, if you're Polish。I was delighted to discover how heavily the Witcher stories lean on retelling fairy I highly recommend reading this with the translation guide on Reddit by u/coldcynic。 Tells you about puns and jokes that got lost in translation, as well as giving you a sense for how the language is used in the original Polish。 I know nothing about Polish, but now I know that they have eight words for door。 And that "Mousesack" apparently sounds like a perfectly serious name for a druid to have, if you're Polish。I was delighted to discover how heavily the Witcher stories lean on retelling fairy tales, such as Snow White and Beauty and the Beast。 That didn't come through in the show at all! I love retold fairy tales! Will definitely be picking up the rest of these books。 。。。more

Geralt is a Witcher, an assassin who targets monsters。 Each story in this collection tells a tale of one monster he has tracked and defeated。I haven’t read or watched anything in the Witcher series, so this story was completely new to me。 I enjoyed the stories, but it was a little hard to get into them at first。 I was completely new to the characters and the world, so it took a while to figure everything out。 Once I figured out the way the stories were being told, I really enjoyed the stories。I Geralt is a Witcher, an assassin who targets monsters。 Each story in this collection tells a tale of one monster he has tracked and defeated。I haven’t read or watched anything in the Witcher series, so this story was completely new to me。 I enjoyed the stories, but it was a little hard to get into them at first。 I was completely new to the characters and the world, so it took a while to figure everything out。 Once I figured out the way the stories were being told, I really enjoyed the stories。I was surprised at the fairy tale aspects of the stories。 There were references to Cinderella, Snow White, and Rumpelstiltskin, among others。 I loved the references to these classic tales。 Even the moral of the stories, that not everything that looks like a monster is evil and everything that looks good isn’t necessarily good, was reminiscent of fairy tale lessons。I can’t wait to read more of the books in The Witcher series。 。。。more

I must say, The Last Wish and I started off on a bad start。 Having some knowledge of the world via the Netflix show–which I loved–I came in thinking I would love this as well, which wasn't the case。 While reading, there was this constant feeling that something was off or keeping me from fully enjoying my time。 Up until the 50% range, it sat there in the back of my head as I read and I didn't know why [I still don't]。 Things picked up for me after the mid-to-high 50% mark of the book, I felt like I must say, The Last Wish and I started off on a bad start。 Having some knowledge of the world via the Netflix show–which I loved–I came in thinking I would love this as well, which wasn't the case。 While reading, there was this constant feeling that something was off or keeping me from fully enjoying my time。 Up until the 50% range, it sat there in the back of my head as I read and I didn't know why [I still don't]。 Things picked up for me after the mid-to-high 50% mark of the book, I felt like I was finally enjoying myself。 With that said, I'm sad to say that that only nudged my rating of the book from 3 to 3。5 stars。 I really do hope that Sword of Destiny [the next in line] is more enjoyable for me as I would love to delve more into this word film and literature wise。 3。5/5 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The descriptions of women’s and GIRLS’ breasts bothered me but not enough apparently, since I still absolutely loved this book。 I don’t really understand why Geralt and Yennefer fell for each other so deeply all of a sudden (despite his wish, which also kinda didn’t make sense to me), but maybe it’ll clear up later in the series。

This is like a collection of short stories, that are connected, but at the same time, they are not。 They are part of the adventure of one man - Geralt of Rivia。 Some stories are better than others, so there is a small problem of quality through the book。 But overall was very and easy to read。

This is definitely not the kind of book I usually read, but I really enjoyed the series and the book caught my attention! I think this just falls under "this book just isn't for me", and it really isn't, so I wasn't the best judge of it, so take my review with a grain of salt! Im glad to have watched the show first since it made me understand the book better and to have an image of the characters in my head。 I'm excited for the second season if the show! I got the audiobook version of this for free, and I'm somewhat glad of that。 It is a series of short stories, the majority of which were plundered for plots for the first season of the Witcher series on Netflix。 That meant I already knew how the plots would go, more or less, but it has been a little while since I watched the series, so the stories were foggy enough that that didn't bother me, and there were layers of other details and textures added in the text, particularly about smells, though I got the audiobook version of this for free, and I'm somewhat glad of that。 It is a series of short stories, the majority of which were plundered for plots for the first season of the Witcher series on Netflix。 That meant I already knew how the plots would go, more or less, but it has been a little while since I watched the series, so the stories were foggy enough that that didn't bother me, and there were layers of other details and textures added in the text, particularly about smells, thoughts, and things that are not easily conveyed via television。 The main reason I marked it down a star has to do with the narration, which is delivered with many characters having Irish or Scottish accents, which doesn't fit that well with the original material。 I also found the sylvan character very difficult to understand because of the choice to give him kind of a goat bleat。 Apart from that, the book itself was quite enjoyable, even if it covered stories I have already encountered。 That is hardly the fault of the book, since it came first。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 When I started reading this book I was beyond excited。 A good friend highly recommended it and said he had re-read it multiple times suggesting I’d have a hard time putting it down。 Not to mention all of the 5 Star reviews it seemed as though this would be a blast。 Unfortunately, it was not。 Where to begin…。 I have no problems when fantasy authors recycle fantasy tropes, creatures, characters but this book takes it to a whole other level。 There is little to no originality within these texts。 The When I started reading this book I was beyond excited。 A good friend highly recommended it and said he had re-read it multiple times suggesting I’d have a hard time putting it down。 Not to mention all of the 5 Star reviews it seemed as though this would be a blast。 Unfortunately, it was not。 Where to begin…。 I have no problems when fantasy authors recycle fantasy tropes, creatures, characters but this book takes it to a whole other level。 There is little to no originality within these texts。 The only thing he does is make traditionally good creatures bad and bad creatures good unless you’re a female vampire who’s boobs are popping out, which is a description I didn’t need fyi。 Admittedly the Witcher was somewhat original although I get the sense that he was influenced by the Witch King of Agmar in LOTR albeit a very different type of character but I digress。 Characters are two dimensional and beyond this there is absolutely 0 character development。 Geralt is the exact same person from start to finish and as absolutely no depth。 The world building stands on weak scaffolding and is fucking impossible to follow。 I’ll admit I am by no means a scholarly intellect but it seemed like the author was just inventing a new city, village, mountain, or kingdom with no fucking continuity, pulling them directly from his colon in every chapter。 The names were garbally-gook and the author clearly just made them up out of thin air with no thought。 By the way, I have no issues with made up fantasy names but at least make them somewhat easy to read。 Like Samwise, Frodo, Tyrian, Joffrey, Snape - all made up and I don’t have to spend all of my concentration sounding out names like a 4 year old。 I quit at the story where Geralt gets captured by the fawn oh sorry, devil no wait it’s a sylvan。 Someone explain this to me: these villagers hire a Witcher to go kick this “devil” or demon or whatever out of their glade and it turns out he’s smuggling corn, beans, and other goods to elves, who are supposedly among the most ancient humanoids on the planet but DONT KNOW HOW TO FARM (WTF) and so he’s giving them items to grow crops, but again, they can’t farm so that’s going to be fucking useless, and then right before they’re about to execute them the homeless mute girl who’s been with the villagers this entire time shows up out of no where with her side kick deer and hedgehog and escorts the elves away only after calming them down and now they’re like, “yah we hate you, Witcher and we were literally about to murder you in cold blood (for no real reason) but our motherly goddess showed up and telepathically told us not to, so here’s another sweet lute and we’re out。” Question, WHY DIDN’T THE VILLAGERS JUST SEND THIS CHICK OUT THERE TO BEGIN WITH!? I know that was a run on sentence but If you’re lost, welcome to the club。 。。。more
